Twenty years after Beloved's publication, in 1987, the novel was first banned from AP English classes at Eastern High School in Louisville, Kentucky because of the book’s mention of bestiality, racism and sex. The cause of the book being banned was because two parents complained that the book discussed inappropriate parts about the Antebellum slavery.

the book along with five other books should require parental permission for
students to read them.

Students at the Plymouth-Canton Schools in Michigan had gotten a crash course in
politics because one family launched an official complaint on December
20, 2011 to have the fictional novel Beloved banned from the AP English curriculum due to racial themes, sexual
content, and passages about ghosts.

Beloved had been challenged, but was kept as a text in Salem (MI) High School Advanced Placement English courses. The complainants specified the reported material of some passages in the book and asked that it be removed from the curriculum, but the District officials determined the novel was appropriate for the age and maturity level of Advanced Placement students.
